Vertigo and Vestibular Rehabilitation is a specialised area of physiotherapy that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that affect the inner ear, also known as the vestibular system, which is responsible for balance and spatial orientation. Vertigo and vestibular conditions can cause a range of symptoms, including dizziness, vertigo and imbalance.
Joe is our Senior Vestibular Physiotherapist, who has completed his training through the internationally recognised Herdman Vestibular course. His experience has spanned across several clinical settings, including the Emergency Department, Hospital Wards and Outpatients within the Hunter New England Health district.

At Shoreside Physio we may approach your vertigo and vestibular rehabilitation as follows:
- Assessment: The first step in vertigo and vestibular rehabilitation is to conduct a thorough assessment to determine the specific condition and its impact on your balance and coordination. This may involve a combination of tests and evaluations, including balance assessments, vision assessments, and positional testing.
- Exercise Therapy: Once the condition has been identified, we can develop an exercise therapy program to help the patient improve their balance, coordination, and strength. This will involve the prescription of exercises to improve head/neck/eye coordination, which focus on the neural connections between the brain and vestibular system.
- BPPV (Canalith Repositioning) Manoeuvres: In some cases, vertigo may be caused by the displacement of tiny calcium carbonate crystals in the inner ear. We can perform specific manoeuvres to reposition these crystals and alleviate your symptoms of vertigo.
- Balance and Gait training: For patients who experience balance and coordination problems, we can develop a program of balance and gait training. This may include exercises to improve proprioception, which is the ability to sense the position and movement of the body.
- Lifestyle Modification: In addition to exercise therapy, we may recommend lifestyle modifications to help you manage your symptoms. This may include tips for avoiding triggers that exacerbate vertigo, such as sudden movements, bright lights or certain diets.
Overall, Vertigo and Vestibular Rehabilitation at Shoreside Physio will likely involve a combination of exercises, techniques, and interventions that are tailored to the specific needs of each patient. By working with us, individuals with vertigo and vestibular conditions can improve their balance, coordination, and quality of life.
